Small Business Marketing Advice
A lot of businesses have a rather haphazard way of approaching marketing, but the fact is, one must have a well-organized marketing plan to get the best results. In other cases, business owners focus too much on one type of marketing, such as online marketing, while ignoring other forms of marketing. Below are some tips I have for small businesses who are interested in adopting a multi-pronged marketing strategy:
1) Make sure your business can be found online.
You'd be surprised at how many businesses had no presence or only a limited presence online. Today, the cost of developing a website are close to zero if you use certain solutions, and there is no excuse for not having a website. Once you have a website developed, your work doesn't stop there. You need to make sure people can find your site when they do a search on Google. The way to accomplishing this is by doing something called search engine optimization (SEO). You can learn some SEO on your own, but for the best results, you may want to hire a professional SEO firm.
2) Have some offline marketing materials.
Some people make the mistake of just doing online marketing. But to make sure your marketing is well-balanced, you should have some offline marketing materials as well. This would include things like business cards and brochures. If you're on a budget, you can consider making flyers instead of brochures. Either way, it can be highly useful to have materials you can hand out to people.
3) Brand your business.
It's important to have taglines, logos, artwork or anything else memorable that can be associated with your business. At the most basic level you should have a logo designed, and fortunately, logo designers are not that expensive if you find contactors online. Once you have your logo, you should put it on everything related to your business. This includes business cards and even checks. If you order checks from Deluxe, you can have your logo printed on your checks at a modest fee. Be sure you use these coupon codes from Deluxe to get the lowest prices possible.
4) Develop a list.
A lot of successful businesses have an active contact list, and you should work hard to develop one yourself. Having a newsletter of some sort is one good way to get people to sign up for your list. Make sure you have a signup page on your website that is promoted prominently. Once you have over a hundred members on the last, communicate with them regularly (but not excessively) to stay in touch. I've found about once a month is the right frequency.
